2.1 Held Beliefs
What I am going to present is not complex.  It can pose difficulties, however, because it relies upon a willingness to challenge our own beliefs. Typically we hold on tightly to beliefs and ideas that we held for so much of our lives.  When we challenge our own beliefs, it can be frightening because we may fear losing that which we have come to rely upon.  Regardless of desire to change our lives for the better, there is resistance to change.  Look at whatever resistance you encounter, see what is causing it and you will find what it is that you believe that is being challenged.  The resistance you notice is a good thing.  It gives you the opportunity understand yourself better.  It results because there is an existing belief, or set of beliefs, that you have adopted that you may want to look at further.  There is nothing to fear because you get to choose what you will believe.
By looking at our resistance we discover what is going on within our own minds.  We can see where our ideas differ from those we are hearing.  We can compare ideas and discover just why we are wanting to keep our existing ideas intact.  If we are holding on to beliefs out of fear, then at least we can see that.  If we discover that we prefer our beliefs because they inspire us somehow, then we now better understand our own inner workings.  We can assess just how much what we hear differs from what we currently believe.  In all cases, we are the winner.  Beliefs worth believing will be supported and beliefs that we see could use some revision are now evident.
There is an ironic facet involved.  It is our own belief system that discourages us from discovering new ways of thinking and being.  In essence, our current beliefs can hinder us from discovering new ways of believing.  But since there is no way to remain as you are forever, it’s really only a minor issue. Change is inevitable.  We get to lead that change or be passive.  Life will show us all what is best for us one way or the other.  I’ve just found that when I challenge my own ideas, life can work its magic with less drama and upheaval and is much more enjoyable and rewarding.
